Rapping beats – Mixing and Mastering your songs – Is It Necessary?

This Rapping Beats article is part of a series on becoming a successful independent Urban Music Artist (Rapper, Singer, etc.) You can view all the articles in this series on the author’s page.

Once you’ve got your hit rap beats chosen and your vocals recorded comes the most crucial step in the music making game – Mixing and Mastering. Recording your vocals on Rap Beats and Instrumentals is an important step as well but is that all there is to making professional music? What’s the real secret behind how professional music sounds? Most independent rappers and singers take this for granted and end up sounding like amateurs. Don’t get caught slippin!

Q: Do I HAVE to get my song Mixed and Mastered or is it ok to just record vocals on top of a beat?

A: The short answer is YES YOU DO! But it does depend on what you want to do with your song. If you are recording a song on rapping beats or R&B beats that you want to share with friends and family and do nothing else with, then you may not need to get it mixed and mastered. But if you plan on really promoting this song (especially on the radio) or selling it then you definitely HAVE TO get the vocals and rap beats mixed and mastered. It doesn’t matter if you have the best microphone in the world and rapping beats or soundclick beats from the best beatmakers alive – you HAVE TO BE MIXED AND MASTERED. There’s no getting around it. And don’t just go to ANYONE to get this done – make sure they’re work sounds good! Your song is your message to the world – you want it to sound as good as possible. You only get one chance at a first impression so make it count. There are lots of online and local solutions for you. Google Precursor Productions – they do GREAT mixing and mastering and it’s not too expensive.

So what exactly is mixing and mastering rapping beats and vocals? Mixing is the process of balancing all the different sounds in your rapping beats or r&b beats (including your vocals) so you can hear everything properly and its not too hard or distorted. It’s what happens after all the vocals have been recorded and tracked. Mixing is where all the special effects (reverbs, echos, EQ, compression) happen. Mastering is the final process in producing a song. It’s the last chance to catch anything that sounds off or wrong. It’s also when everything gets processed so everything gels together and sounds polished and professional. If you’re serious about your music career and want people to think you are too – GET MIXED AND MASTERED PROPERLY. It’s worth it and will save you the embarrassment of sounding like an amateur.

Writing a rap song is not as easy as you may think. There are many aspects that go into writing a good sounding rap song. These aspects may go unnoticed to the listener, but it is in essence what can make or break a rap song. One of these aspects is how much syllables you rhyme with. If you rhyme with only one syllable its likely to sound like a novice wrote it, also known in the Hip Hop culture as “Nursery Rhymes”. If you rhyme with too much syllables it is likely not to make any sense, witch is just as bad as making up your own words to rhyme with. The recommended approach is to rhyme two to four syllables, and have at lease one rhyme every two bars. A bar is when the snare in an instrumental or beat hits twice. A rap verse usually has sixteen bars and a hook usually has eight bars. This means that in a verse the snare will usually hit thirty two times, and in a hook it will hit sixteen times. In some instrumentals or beats the snare might have a change up. When this happens you will have to estimate when you think the snare would of hit. This is not hard to do if you can rhyme on beat. Another aspect to writing a good sounding rap song is to rhyme a multi syllable word with two or more one syllable words. An example of this is to rhyme the word “activate” with the words “pack a plate”. This is a good way to avoid using the same words over and over again. If you are ever stuck and can’t think of words that rhyme, you can use a rhyme chart to find out what words to use. A good website to find a rhyme chart is http://upbeat.tk which is highly recommended. They also have good instrumentals and beats that are not too expensive. There is no orthodox way of writing a rap song but if you use some of the aspects you read about here, there is a good chance you will be writing good and professional sounding rap songs in a small matter of time.

The best site to find a rhyme chart is http://upbeat.tk/ this site also has good instrumentals and beats. Thank you and enjoy
